Smart Growth America

Smart Growth America envisions a country where no matter where you live or who you are, you can enjoy living in a place that is healthy, prosperous, and resilient. We empower communities through technical assistance, advocacy, and thought leadership to realize our vision of livable places, healthy people, and shared prosperity.

Our climate, health, and equity work is most focused on:

Advocating for policies that support safe, accessible, and attractive options for quality housing and access to jobs, and essential services both in and out of a car to increase quality of life and economic opportunity, improve health outcomes, and reduce emissions from transportation, particularly in historically underserved communities.

This is important because:

Poor housing quality, lack of access to mobility options, and resource insecurity are prominent contributors to health inequities and environmental injustices facing communities across the country as they are deeply rooted in both the institutional systems and built environments that shape our daily lives. The climate change and health crises cannot be met unless we address sprawling land use generating ever higher vehicle miles traveled and resulting growth in carbon emissions, which are well documented to disproportionately harm already underserved communities. Our work seeks to address the deficiencies in our built environment that so often prevent people from enjoying a healthy, prosperous, and resilient life.
